Abstract: To address the problem of visualizing the interference effects of objects with multilayer film structures such as soap bubbles, optical lenses and Morpho butterflies in the physics-based framework, a novel full-spectrum multilayer film interference method is presented. This method applies the multi-beam interference equation to effectively simulate the multiple reflection and transmission inside films, and calculate the composite reflectance and transmittance to model the amplitude and phase variations related to interference. The Fresnel coefficients used for metallic and dielectric films are introduced to explain the absorption of photons due to the film materials, and the microfacet scattering factor is also applied to simulate the complex optical effects such as the isotropic and anisotropic phenomena caused by the roughness of the surface geometry. This method is integrated into the existing ray tracer to further enhance the photorealistically rendering capabilities. The experim ental results demonstrate that our method can efficiently model the phase and amplitude information of wave to generate high-quality realistic interference effects. (More)
