Abstract:
Trump’s presidential election was a political blow that it was called “Trumpquake”. He certainly does not suit Washington politician style due to his background as business tycoon, with his controversial pledges and policies. His victory is the product of the rise of US populism. His early days in the White House were accompanied by various social movements, protests on the streets, and disagreements. This writing aims to analyze how the rise of populism in the US plays roles in the escalation of tension and fear among the US citizens, chiefly dealing with his populist policies and the rise of xenophobia, Islamophobia and nativism. To have reliable result, populism concept is employed. As this writing is a qualitative descriptive research, US presidential rhetoric and policies are chosen as the sources of primary data and relevant writings as the sources of secondary data. The research uncovers that the rise of US populism heightens the increasing instability of social life and the n
umbers of human rights abuse. This writing can be a recommendation for further research concerning the consequence of Trump’s populism on US political life.
