Self-Consciousness Cannot Be Programmed

Abstract

We investigate the issue about whether a computer can be self-aware or self-conscious. We derive logically that if a machine can be copied or duplicated then it cannot be self-aware. Programs of a digital computer are copiable, therefore self-consciousness cannot be programmed. Self-awareness is an insurmountable stumbling block for a digital computer to achieve full range of human consciousness. A robot cannot be self-conscious unless it is not copiable.
