This volume contains the proceedings of the First International Conference on Web Information Systems and Technologies (WEBIST 2005), organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Communication and Control (INSTICC) in collaboration with Florida International University (FIU). The purpose of this conference is to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners interested in the technological advances and business applications of web-based information systems. It has five main topic areas, covering different aspects of Web Information Systems, including Internet Computing, Web Interfaces and Applications, Web Security, Society and e-Business, and e-Learning. WEBIST 2005 received 110 paper submissions from 37 countries in all continents. After a doubleblind review process, with the help of more than 100 experts from the international program committee, 54 papers were selected and published as oral presentation, and 21 additional papers, describing
work-in-progress, were accepted for poster presentation. The “oral presentation” acceptance ratio was 49%, and the total acceptance ratio was below 75%. One of the interesting things about WEBIST is the existence of a large number of keynote lectures, specifically six. These keynote lectures, presented by internationally recognized specialists in different knowledge areas have definitely contributed to increase the overall quality of the conference. The program for this conference required the dedicated effort of many people. Firstly, we must thank the authors, whose research and development efforts are recorded here. Secondly, we thank the members of the program committee and the additional reviewers for their diligence and expert reviewing. Last but not least, we thank the invited speakers for their invaluable contribution and for taking the time to synthesize and prepare their talks. We wish you all an exciting conference and an unforgettable stay in the lovely city of Miami. We hope to meet you again next year for the 2nd WEBIST, in Portugal, details of which will be shortly made available at http://www.webist.org.
