Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Geographical Information Systems Theory, Applications and Management (GISTAM 2015). This conference is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) in cooperation with the ACM SIGSPATIAL, the Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Association (GSDI), the Canadian Institute of Geomatics and Cartographic, the Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC) and the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS). GISTAM 2015 is also technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society. The purpose of the International Conference on Geographical Information Systems Theory, Applications and Management is to create a meeting point of researchers and practitioners that address new challenges in geo-spatial data sensing, observation, representation, processing, visualization, sharing and managing, in all aspects concerning both information communication and technologies (ICT) as well as management information systems and knowledge-based systems. GISTAM received 45 paper submissions from 25 countries, 42% of which were orally presented (24% as full papers) which shows the intention of preserving a high quality forum for the next editions of this conference. The conference program includes a panel and four invited talks delivered by internationally distinguished speakers, namely: Robert Laurini (INSA, University of Lyon, France), José Bioucas Dias (Telecommunications Institute, Portugal), Jordi Corbera (Geological and Cartographic Institute of Catalonia, Spain) and Ed Parsons (Google UK Ltd, United Kingdom). The GISTAM program also includes a Doctoral Consortium on Geographical Information Systems Theory, Applications and Management that brings together Ph.D. students within the geographic information systems and technologies field to discuss their research in an international forum. We would like to thank the Doctoral Consortium Chair, Robert Laurini, for his collaboration in this important satellite event. A short list of authors will be selected and invited to submit extended revised versions of their papers for a book that will be published by Springer, in the CCIS Series, with the best papers of GISTAM 2015. A few papers will also be selected for publication of extended and revised versions in the Journal of Geographical Systems. To recognize the best submissions and the best student contributions, several awards based on the combined marks of paper reviewing, as assessed by the Program Committee, and the quality of the presentation, as assessed by session chairs at the conference venue, are conferred at the closing session of the conference. We would like to express our thanks to all participants. First of all, to the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this conference. Next, we thank all the members of the program committee and the auxiliary reviewers for their diligence and expert reviewing. We must deeply thank the invited speakers for their excellent contribution in sharing their knowledge and vision. We would like to thank the GISTAM Program chair Jorge Gustavo Rocha and the Local chair Joaquín Huerta, whose competence was essential for ensuring the technical quality of the conference and whose collaboration was very much appreciated. Finally, special thanks to all the members of the INSTICC team whose collaboration was fundamental for the success of this conference. We wish you all an inspiring conference and an unforgettable stay at Barcelona, Spain. We hope to meet you again next year for the 2nd GISTAM at Rome, Italy. (More)
