Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Imaging Theory and Applications (IMAGAPP 2011) and the International Conference on Information Visualization Theory and Applications (IVAPP 2011) which were organized and sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). We hope that the proceedings here published, demonstrate new and innovative solutions, and highlight technical problems in each field that are challenging and worthwhile. The field of imaging and visualization overlaps the research areas of computer vision and computer graphics. Thus, IMAGAPP and IVAPP were organized to promote a discussion forum between researchers, developers, manufactures and end-users, about imaging applications and to establish guidelines in the developing of more advanced solutions IMAGAPP 2011 received 40 paper submissions from that were reviewed by an international program committee. From the submitted papers, 3 papers were published and presented as full papers, 10 were accepted for short presentation and 5 for poster presentation. IVAPP 2011 received 33 paper submissions from that were reviewed by an international program committee. To evaluate each submission, we used a double-blind evaluation method and each paper was reviewed by at least two experts from the International Program Committee. In the end, 5 papers were selected for oral presentation and for publication as full papers, 6 papers were accepted for short presentation and 9 were accepted for poster presentation. These numbers, representing a full-paper acceptance ratio of around 8% for IMAGAPP and 15% for IVAPP, shows the intention of the organizers to initiate IMAGAPP and IVAPP as a high quality forum on imaging and visualization applications. Moreover, the conferences also featured a number of keynote lectures delivered by internationally well known experts thus contributing to increase the overall quality of the conferences and to provide a deeper understanding of the conference interest fields. We hope that these Conference Proceedings, submitted for indexation by Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index, INSPEC, DBLP and EI, may help the Computer Imaging and Visualization community to find interesting research work. Furthermore, a short list of presented papers will be selected to be expanded into a forthcoming book of VISIGRAPP Selected Papers to be published by Springer during 2011. In order to promote the development of professional networks the organizing committee has prepared a Conference Dinner in the evening of March 6th. We hope that you enjoy this exciting conference and have an unforgettable stay in the beautiful city of Vilamoura, Algarve. Finally, we would like to express our thanks, first of all, to the authors of the technical papers, whose work and dedication make possible to put together a program that we believe very exciting and of high technical quality. Next, we would like to thank all the members of the program committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and time. We would also like to thank the invited speakers for their invaluable contribution and for sharing their vision in their talks. Special thanks should be addressed to the INSTICC Steering Committee whose invaluable work made possible this event. We wish you all an exciting conference and an unforgettable stay in Vilamoura, Algarve. We hope to meet you again for the next edition of IMAGAPP and IVAPP details of which will be shortly available at http://www.imagapp.visigrapp.org and http://www.ivapp.visigrapp.org. (More)
