This book contains the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Pervasive and Embedded Computing and Communication Systems (PECCS 2014) which was sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and held in cooperation with Euromicro. The Conference Program includes oral presentations (full papers and short papers) and posters, organized in three simultaneous tracks: “Mobile and Pervasive Computing”, “Digital Signal Processing” and “Embedded Systems Design”. We are proud to inform that the program includes also seven plenary keynote lectures, given by internationally distinguished researchers, namely Pasquale Daponte (University of Sannio, Italy), Chenyang Lu (Washington University in St. Louis, United States), Kim G. Larsen (Aalborg University, Denmark), Sandro Carrara (EPFL, Switzerland) and Markus Pollnau (University of Twente, Netherlands9. PECCS received 50 paper submissions from 24 countries, in all
continents. To evaluate each submission, a double blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members are highly qualified researchers in PECCS topic areas. Based on the classifications provided, only 13 papers were selected for oral presentation (3 full papers and 10 short papers) and 14 papers were selected for poster presentation. The total oral acceptance ratio (including full papers and short papers) was 26%. These strict acceptance ratios show the intention to preserve a high quality forum which we expect to develop further next year. All papers presented at this conference will be available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. In order to promote the excellence of young researcher and to encourage them in their future contributions, the "Best Student Paper Award" will be conferred to the author(s) of a full paper presented at the conference, selected by the Program/Conference Chairs based on the best combined marks of paper reviewing, assessed by the Program Committee, and paper presentation quality, assessed by session chairs at the conference venue. Conferences are also meeting places where collaboration projects can emerge from social contacts amongst the participants. Therefore, in order to promote the development of research and professional networks the Conference includes in its social program a Conference Social Event & Banquet in the evening of January 8th. We would like to express our thanks to all participants. First of all to the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this conference; secondly to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. We would also like to deeply thank the invited speakers for their excellent contribution in sharing their knowledge and vision. Finally, a word of appreciation for the hard work of the secretariat: organizing a conference of this level is a task that can only be achieved by the collaborative effort of a dedicated and highly capable team. We wish you all an inspiring conference and an unforgettable stay in the lovely city of Lisbon, Portugal. We hope to meet you again next year for the 5th PECCS, details of which will soon be available at http://www.peccs.org.
