This book contains the proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Smart Cities and Green ICT Systems (SMARTGREENS 2016) which was organized and sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and held in cooperation with Association for Computing Machinery – SIGCAS, EDSO for smart grids, IEEE TCSC Technical Area in Green Computing, Israeli Smart Energy Association (ISEA) and Friends of the Supergrid. This conference was also technically co-sponsored by IEEE Power & Energy Society. This conference best paper award was sponsored by COMARCH.
We expect that these proceedings, which approach areas like “Smart Cities”, “Energy-Aware Systems and Technologies”, “Sustainable Computing and Communications”, appeals to a global audience of engineers, scientists and business people interested in the research topics of SMARTGREENS.
We believe the proceedings here published demonstrate new and innovative solutions, and highlight
challenging technical problems in each field.
SMARTGREENS 2016 received 83 paper submissions from all continents. From these, 19 papers were published and presented as full papers, 21 were accepted as short. These numbers, leading to a full-paper acceptance ratio of 23% and an oral paper acceptance ratio of 48%, shows the intention of preserving a high quality forum for the next editions of this conference. Moreover, the conference also featured a number of keynote lectures delivered by internationally known experts, namely Paolo Tenti (University of Padova, Italy), Giovanni Giuliani (HP Italy Innovation Centre, Italy), Barbara Pernici (Politecnico di Milano, Italy) and Venkatesh Prasad (Ford Motor Company, United States) thus contributing to increase the overall quality of the conference and to provide a deeper understanding of the conference interest fields.
The meeting was also complemented with a Doctoral Consortium on “Smart Cities and Green ICT Systems” chaired by Dr. Markus Helfert, a tutorial on “Energy-Efficient Telecommunications: Technologies, Techniques and Prospects” lectured by Kerry Hinton and the Special Session on Modelling Practical Paradigms of Green Manufacturing Systems – MoMa-GreenSys chaired by Prof. Calin Ciufudean.
The number and high quality of the papers received imposed difficult choices in the review process. Each paper was reviewed by at least, two reviewers. From these reviews, those papers that were adequately balanced in terms of quality, originality and relevance to the conference themes were selected.
Besides the proceedings edited by SCITEPRESS, a post-conference book will be compiled with extended versions of the conference´s best papers and published by Springer in a CCIS Series book. Appropriate indexing has been arranged for the proceedings of WEBIST 2016 including Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index, INSPEC, DBLP, EI and Scopus. Furthermore, all presented papers will be available at the SCITEPRESS digital library.
To recognize the best submissions and the best student contributions, awards based on the best combined marks of paper reviewing, as assessed by the Program Committee, and the quality of the presentation, as evaluated by session chairs at the conference venue, were conferred at the closing session of the conference.
As a final point, we would like to express our thanks, first of all, to the authors of the technical papers, whose work and dedication made possible to put together a program that we believe is very exciting and of high technical quality. Next, we would like to thank all the members of the program committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and time. We would also like to thank the invited speakers for their invaluable contribution and for sharing their vision in their talks. Special thanks should be addressed to the INSTICC Steering Committee whose invaluable work made this event possible and finally, a word of appreciation for the hard work of the secretariat: organizing a conference of this level is a task that can only be achieved by the collaborative effort of a dedicated and highly capable team.
