This book contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Sensor Networks (SENSORNETS 2012) which was organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). The Conference Program includes oral presentations (full papers and short papers) and posters, organized in seven simultaneous tracks: “Sensor Networks Software and Architectures”, “Wireless Information Networks”, “Hardware”, “Data Manipulation”, “Signal Processing”, “Obstacles” and “Applications and Uses”. Furthermore, we are proud to announce that the plenary program also includes five keynote lectures, given by internationally distinguished researchers, namely Joseph Sifakis (Verimag, France), Paul Lencioni (Cutthroat Communications / Crimson Consulting Group, U.S.), Pedro José Marrón (University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany), Kin K. Leung (Imperial College, U.K.) and Juan Carlos Augusto (University of Ulster at Jordanstown, U.K.). SENSORNETS received 55 paper
submissions from 27 countries, of every continent. To evaluate each submission, a double blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members are highly qualified researchers in SENSORNETS topic areas. Based on the classifications provided, 21 papers were selected for oral presentation (9 full papers and 12 short papers) and 10 papers were selected for poster presentation. The full paper acceptance ratio of SENSORNETS 2012 is 16%, and the total oral acceptance ratio (including full papers and short papers) 38%. These strict acceptance ratios show the intention to preserve a high quality forum which we expect to develop further next year. All papers presented at this conference will be available at the SciTePress Digital Library. Conferences are also meeting places where information exchange occurs and where collaboration emerges from social contacts amongst the participants. Therefore, in order to promote the development of research and professional networks the Conference includes in its social program a Conference Social Event & Banquet in the evening of February 25th. We would like to express our thanks to all participants, and particularly to the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this conference.Secondly we owe gratitude to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. We would also like to deeply thank the invited speakers for their excellent contribution in sharing their knowledge and vision. Finally, a word of appreciation for the hard work of the secretariat: organizing a high level conference is a task that can only be achieved by the collaborative effort of a dedicated and highly capable team. We wish you all an inspiring conference and an unforgettable stay in the lovely city of Rome, Italy. We hope to meet you again next year for SENSORNETS 2013, details of which will soon be available at http://www.sensornets.org.
