Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Internet of Things and Big Data (IoTBD 2016) which was organized and sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). We hope that these proceedings, which include topics like “Internet of Things (IoT) Fundamentals”, “Internet of Things (IoT) Applications”, “Big Data Research”, “Big Data and Complex Biological Science” and “Emerging Services and Analytics”, are interesting to a global audience of engineers, scientists and business people interested in the research topics of IoTBD. We believe the proceedings published demonstrate new and innovative solutions, and highlight challenging technical problems in each field. IoTBD 2016 received 76 paper submissions from 26 countries. From these, 20 papers were published and presented as full papers. The conference was complemented with the special session entitled Recent Advancement in IoT, Big Data and Security - RAIBS (co-chaired by Victor Chang, Chung-Sheng Li (honorary chair), Gary Graham, Rashid Mehmood, Patrick Hennelly and Robert Walters). The meeting was also enhanced with a Doctoral Consortium on “Internet of Things and Big Data” chaired by Dr. Robert Walters. Furthermore it was held the first edition of the FGCS Forum co-chaired by Victor Chang, (Leeds Beckett University, United Kingdom), Víctor Méndez Muñoz (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, UAB, Spain) and Peter Sloot (University of Amsterdam, Netherlands; Complexity Institute Singapore, Singapore; ITMO St. Petersburg, Russian Federation). The conference featured a number of keynote lectures delivered by internationally known experts, namely Peter Sloot (University of Amsterdam, Netherlands; Complexity Institute Singapore, Singapore; ITMO St. Petersburg, Russian Federation), Verena Kantere (University of Geneva, Switzerland), Donald Ferguson (Columbia University, United States), Mohammed Atiquzzaman (University of Oklahoma, United States), Schahram Dustdar (Vienna University of Technology, Austria) thus contributing to increase the overall quality of the conference and to provide a deeper understanding of the conference interest fields. The number and high quality of the papers received imposed difficult choices in the review process. Each paper was reviewed by at least, two reviewers. Based on those reviews, papers that adequately balanced quality, originality and relevance to the conference themes were selected. The proceedings of IoTBD will be submitted for indexation by DBLP, Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index, INSPEC, EI and Scopus. A short list of papers presented at the conference will be selected for publication of extended and revised versions in a special issue of the Journal of Information Management (IF= 1.550), International Journal of Organizational and Collective Intelligence, Open Journal of Big Data (OJBD), Future Generation Computer Systems Journal (IF = 2.786) and Journal of Network and Computer Application (IF=2.229). All presented papers will be available at the SCITEPRESS digital library. To recognize the best submissions and the best student contributions, awards based on the best combined marks of paper reviewing, as assessed by the Program Committee, and the quality of the presentation, as evaluated by the chairs at the conference venue, were conferred at the closing session of the conference. The best paper award for this year´s edition was sponsored by Dell. As a final point, we would like to express our thanks, first of all, to the authors of the technical papers, whose work and dedication made possible to put together a program that we believe is very exciting and of high technical quality. Next, we would like to thank all the members of the program committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and time. We would also like to thank the invited speakers for their invaluable contribution and for sharing their vision in their talks. Special thanks should be addressed to the INSTICC Steering Committee whose invaluable work made this event possible and finally, a word of appreciation for the hard work of the secretariat: organizing a conference of this level is a task that can only be achieved by the collaborative effort of a dedicated and highly capable team. We wish you all an inspiring conference and an unforgettable stay at Rome, Italy. We look forward to having additional research results presented at the next edition of IoTBD that will change to IoTBDS (International Conference on Internet of Things, Big Data and Security), of which details are available at http://www.iotbds.org.
