This book contains the proceedings of the 11th International Joint Conference on Biomedical Engineering Systems and Technologies (BIOSTEC 2018). This conference is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC), in cooperation with the ACM Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (ACM SIGKDD), the ACM Special Interest Group on Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, and Biomedical Informatics (ACM SIGBIO), the ACM Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence (ACM SIGAI), the EUROMICRO, the European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering & Science (EAMBES), the International Society for Computational Biology (iSCB), the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the International Society for Telemedicine & eHealth (ISfTeH), the Finnish Society for Medical Physics and Medical Engineering and the Swiss Society for Biomedical
Engineering (SSBE). The purpose of BIOSTEC is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in both theoretical advances and applications of information systems, artificial intelligence, signal processing, electronics and other engineering matters in knowledge areas related to biology, e-Health and medicine. BIOSTEC is composed of five complementary and co-located conferences, each specialized in at least one of the aforementioned main knowledge areas: - International Conference on Biomedical Electronics and Devices – BIODEVICES; - International Conference on Bioimaging – BIOIMAGING; - International Conference on Bioinformatics Models, Methods and Algorithms – BIOINFORMATICS; - International Conference on Bio-inspired Systems and Signal Processing – BIOSIGNALS; - International Conference on Health Informatics – HEALTHINF. The purpose of the International Conference on Biomedical Electronics and Devices (BIODEVICES) is to bring together professionals from electronics, mechanical engineering and related disciplines, interested in studying and using models, equipment and materials inspired from biological systems and/or addressing biological requirements. Monitoring devices, instrumentation sensors and systems, bio-robotics, micro-nanotechnologies and biomaterials are some of the technologies presented at this conference. The International Conference on Bioimaging (BIOIMAGING) covers the complex chain of acquiring, processing and visualizing structural or functional images of living objects or systems, including extraction and processing of image-related information. Examples of image modalities used in bioimaging are many, including: X-ray, CT, MRI and fMRI, PET and HRRT PET, SPECT, MEG and so on. Medical imaging and microscope/fluorescence image processing are important parts of bioimaging referring to the techniques and processes used to create images of the human body, anatomical areas, tissues, and so on, down to the molecular level, for clinical purposes, seeking to reveal, diagnose, or examine diseases, or medical science, including the study of normal anatomy and physiology. Image processing methods, such as denoising, segmentation, deconvolution and registration methods, feature recognition and classification represent an indispensable part of bioimaging, as well as related data analysis and statistical tools. The International Conference on Bioinformatics Models, Methods and Algorithms (BIOINFORMATICS) provides an interdisciplinary forum for computational and biomedical researchers as well as practitioners to discuss emerging topics associated with the application of computational systems and information technologies to various fields of biosciences, particularly molecular biology. The conference highlights the advantages of using algorithmic techniques and mathematical models to better understand biological processes and systems, with a focus on recent developments in genomics research and its impact on advancing biomedical research. Areas of interest for this community include sequence analysis, biostatistics, image analysis, scientific data management and data mining, machine learning, pattern recognition, computational evolutionary biology, translational genomics, bioinformatics tools and other related fields. The goal of the International Conference on Bio-inspired Systems and Signal Processing (BIOSIGNALS) is to bring together researchers and practitioners from multiple areas of knowledge, including biology, medicine, engineering and other physical sciences, interested in studying and using models and techniques inspired by or applied to biological systems. A diversity of signal types can be found in this area, including image, audio and other biological sources of information. The analysis and use of these signals is a multidisciplinary area including signal processing, pattern recognition and computational intelligence techniques, amongst others. The International Conference on Health Informatics (HEALTHINF) is the premier forum for the exchange of interdisciplinary research and ideas, across a broad spectrum of design, development, adoption, and application of informatics-based innovations in healthcare services. The field deals with the resources, devices, and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of information in health care. Amongst many other topics, it includes the research, development, and application of decision support systems, clinical data mining and machine learning, physiological and behavioural modelling, software systems in medicine and public health, and mobile, wearable and assistive technologies in healthcare. The conference is also enriched by the satellite events organized with the conference, namely: - The workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Health - AI4Health 2018 - The special session on Knowledge Acquisition and Learning in Semantic Interpretation of Medical Image Structures - KALSIMIS 2018 - The special session on Assessing human cognitive state in real-world environments - Real 2018 - The special session on Neuro-electrostimulation in Neurorehabilitation Tasks - NENT 2018 The BIOSTEC includes a Doctoral Consortium on Biomedical Engineering Systems and Technologies that brought together Ph.D. students within the biomedical field to discuss their research in an international forum. In 2018, BIOSTEC features four invited talks delivered by internationally distinguished speakers: Anatole Lécuyer (Inria Rennes/IRISA, Hybrid Research Team, France), Corina Sas (Lancaster University, United Kingdom), Dinesh Kumar (RMIT University, Australia) and Maximiliano Romero (Università Iuav di Venezia, Italy). The BIOSTEC joint conference received 344 paper submissions from 50 countries in all continents, of which 20% were accepted as full papers. The BIODEVICES conference has received 47 papers and only 13 were accepted as full papers, 12 papers were accepted as short papers and 10 papers as Poster.
The BIOIMAGING conference has received 32 papers and only 7 were accepted as full papers, 6 papers were accepted as short papers and 8 papers as Poster.
The BIOINFORMATICS conference has received 42 papers and only 6 was accepted as full papers, 12 papers were accepted as short papers and 5 papers as Poster.
The BIOSIGNALS conference has received 47 papers and only 8 was accepted as full papers, 16 papers were accepted as short papers and 11 papers as Poster.
The HEALTHINF conference has received 114 papers and only 22 were accepted as full papers, 27 papers were accepted as short papers and 23 papers as Poster. The submission’s high quality imposed difficult choices during the review process. To evaluate each submission, a double blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members are highly qualified independent researchers in the five BIOSTEC Conferences’ topic areas. As in previous editions of BIOSTEC, based on the reviewers’ evaluations and on the quality of the presentations, a short list of authors will be selected and invited to submit extended revised versions of their papers for a book that will be published by Springer with the best papers of BIOSTEC 2018. We would like to express our thanks to all participants. First of all, to the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this joint conference.
