Foreword: This volume contains the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications (VISAPP 2007), organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC), in collaboration with the Computer Vision Center (CVC). VISAPP was intended to stimulate the exchange of ideas on the topic of computer vision and become a major point of contact between researchers, engineers and practitioners in the area of computer vision applications and systems. The conference focused on four different areas related to computer vision, from Image Processing to Image Understanding including Image Analysis and Stereo Vision. All tracks focus on real world applications and highlight the benefits of computer vision for industry and services, thus making a bridge between the Academia and the Enterprise worlds. VISAPP 2007 received 244 paper submissions from more than 50 countries in all continents. 42 papers were published and presented as full papers, i.e. completed work, 64 papers reflecting workin-progress or position papers were accepted for short presentation and another 42 for poster presentation. These numbers, leading to a full-paper acceptance ratio of around 18%, and a total oral acceptance ratio of 43%, shows the intention of preserving a high quality forum for the next editions of this conference. Additionally, in this edition of VISAPP, 1 workshop and 5 special sessions were organized which facilitate the presentation of highly focused work in specialized themes within the topics of conference. Moreover, the conference also featured a number of keynote lectures delivered by internationally well known experts, and also a panel, thus contributing to increase the overall quality of the conference and to provide a deeper understanding of the Computer Vision field. A short list of papers will be selected for a book to be published by Springer. The conference success is due to the efforts of many people, which we gratefully acknowledge. Firstly, we must thank the authors, whose research and development efforts are recorded here. Secondly, we wish also to thank all the referees for their efforts in refereeing the many contributions published in this topical issue. Thirdly, we would like to thank the chairs of the workshop and special sessions for their effort in organizing these events. Fourthly, we thank the invited speakers for their invaluable contribution and for taking the time to synthesise and prepare their talks. Finally, special thanks to all the members of the INSTICC organizing committee, especially Bruno Encarnação and Marina Carvalho. We wish you all an exciting conference and an unforgettable stay in Barcelona. We hope to meet you again next year for the 3rd edition VISAPP conference, next year in Funchal, details of which will be shortly made available at http://www.visapp.org. (More)
