Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Internet of Things, Big Data and Security (IoTBDS 2017) which was organized and sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and Co-organized by the University of Aveiro. We hope that these proceedings, which include areas like “Big Data Research”, “Emerging Services and Analytics”, “Internet of Things (IoT) Fundamentals”, “Internet of Things (IoT) Applications”. “Big Data for Multi-discipline Services”, “Security, Privacy and Trust” and “IoT Technologies”, are interesting to a global audience of engineers, scientists and business people interested in the research topics of IoTBDS. We believe the proceedings published demonstrate new and innovative solutions, and highlight challenging technical problems in each field. IoTBDS 2017 received 75 paper submissions from 30 countries. From these, 17 papers were published and presented as full papers. The conference was complemented with the special session entitled Innovative CyberSecurity and Privacy for Internet of Things: Strategies, Technologies, and Implementations - WICSPIT (chaired by Roger Hallman). The meeting was also enhanced with the second edition of the High Quality Journal Forum chaired by Victor Chang, (Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China) and Francisco Herrera (University of Granada, Spain). The conference also featured a number of keynote lectures delivered by internationally known experts, namely Francisco Herrera (University of Granada, Spain), Jin Li, Guangzhou University, China and Yi-ke Guo (Imperial College, United Kingdom). The meeting was also complemented with an invited talk delivered by Roy R. Cecil (IBM Portugal, Portugal). These talks contribute to increase the overall quality of the conference and to provide a deeper understanding of the conference interest fields. The number and high quality of the papers received imposed difficult choices in the review process. Each paper was reviewed by at least, two reviewers. Based on those reviews, papers that adequately balanced quality, originality and relevance to the conference themes were selected. The proceedings of IoTBDS will be submitted for indexation by DBLP, Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index, INSPEC, EI and Scopus. A short list of papers presented at the conference will be selected for publication of extended and revised versions in a special issue of the Open Journal of Big Data (OJBD), International Journal of Organizational and Collective Intelligence, Future Generation Computer Systems Journal (IF = 2.430), International Journal on Multi-Sensor, Multi-Source Information Fusion (INFFUS IF = 4.353). In addition Authors of best papers will be invited to submit extended versions (at least 30% of new content) of their work to be appreciated for publication in a Fast Track submission process of the Elsevier Applied Soft Computing (ASOC IF = 2.857) Journal. All presented papers will be available at the SCITEPRESS digital library. To recognize the best submissions and the best student contributions, awards based on the best combined marks of paper reviewing, as assessed by the Program Committee, and the quality of the presentation, as evaluated by the chairs at the conference venue, were conferred at the closing session of the conference. As a final point, we would like to express our thanks, first of all, to the authors of the technical papers, whose work and dedication made possible to put together a program that we believe is very exciting and of high technical quality. Next, we would like to thank all the members of the program committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and time. We would also like to thank the invited speakers for their invaluable contribution and for sharing their vision in their talks. Special thanks should be addressed to the INSTICC Steering Committee whose invaluable work made this event possible and finally, a word of appreciation for the hard work of the secretariat: organizing a conference of this level is a task that can only be achieved by the collaborative effort of a dedicated and highly capable team.
