Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Computer Supported Education (CSEDU 2020), organized and sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). The conference was held in cooperation with ACM SIGMIS - ACM Special Interest Group on Management Information Systems, ACM SIGITE - ACM Special Interest Group for Information Technology Education, SADE - Swedish Association for Distance Education, ASEE - American Society for Engineering Education, SPEE - Portuguese Society for Engineering Education, ATIEF - Association des Technologies de l'Information pour l'Education et la Formation, ABENGE - Associação Brasileira de Educação em Engenharia, IELA - The International E-Learning Association, ITD CNR - Istituto per le Tecnologie Didattiche and ICDE – International Council for Open and Distance Education. This year, CSEDU was held from 2 – 4 May as a web-based event, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. CSEDU is an annual meeting place for presenting and discussing learning paradigms, best practices, and case studies about innovative computer-supported learning strategies, web-based distance learning, e-learning, technology-enhanced learning, and institutional policies on computer-based learning. CSEDU 2020 provided an overview of the state of the art in these areas, outlined upcoming trends, and promoted discussions about the educational potential of new learning technologies in the academic and corporate worlds. This conference brought together researchers and practitioners interested in methodologies and applications related to the education field. It had six main topic areas, covering different aspects of Computer Supported Education, including “Artificial Intelligence in Education,” “Domain Applications and Case Studies,” “Information Technologies Supporting Learning,” “Learning/Teaching Methodologies and Assessment,” “Social Context and Learning Environments,” and “Ubiquitous Learning.” These proceedings demonstrate new and innovative solutions and highlight challenging technical problems in each field. CSEDU 2020 received 190 paper submissions from 46 countries, of which 23% were accepted as full papers. The high quality of the submitted papers necessitated difficult choices in the review process. To evaluate each submission, a double-blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members are all highly qualified independent researchers in the CSEDU topic areas. The conference was complemented with two special sessions: Computer Supported Music Education – CSME (chaired by Luca Andrea Ludovico, Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy) and Gamification on Computer Programming Learning – GonCPL (chaired by Martinha Piteira, ESTS/IPS Portugal). The high quality of the CSEDU 2020 programme was enhanced by three keynote lectures, delivered by experts in education and educational technology, including (alphabetically): Pierre Dillenbourg (EPFL, Switzerland), Yannis Dimitriadis (School of Telecommunications Engineering, University of Valladolid, Spain), and Martin Ebner (Technische Universität Graz, Austria). The proceedings will be submitted for indexation by DBLP, Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index (ISI), EI (Elsevier Index), Scopus, Semantic Scholar, Google Scholar, and Microsoft Academic. All presented papers will be available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. Furthermore, a short list of presented papers will be selected, and their authors will be invited to submit an extended version of their papers to be included in a forthcoming book of CSEDU Selected Papers, to be published in the CCIS Series by Springer Verlag. The best contributions to the conference and the best student submissions were distinguished with awards based on the best combined marks of paper reviewing, as assessed by the Program Committee, and the quality of the presentation, as assessed by chairs at the conference. The winners’ names will appear on the conference website along with the winners of the previous editions of the conference, available at http://www.csedu.org/PreviousAwards.aspx. Building an interesting and successful program for the conference required the dedicated effort of many people. We would like to express our thanks to all participants. First, to the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this conference. We would also like to express our gratitude to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who provided their expertise and valuable time. Furthermore, we thank the invited speakers for their invaluable contributions and for taking the time to synthesize and prepare their talks. Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the professional support of the INSTICC team for handling all organizational issues, especially given the need to introduce online streaming, forum management, direct messaging facilitation, and other web-based activities to make it possible for CSEDU 2020 authors to present their work and share ideas with colleagues, in spite of the logistic difficulties caused by the pandemic.
